Aroma: Slight pilsner like aroma: Smoked malt up front. Hints of chocolate and coffee. Brine/Olive like aroma. Slight malt sweetness. No hop aroma. hints of fruit easters (figs/prunes).

Score: 9/12

Appearance: Dark brown, tan head that lingers with fine bubbles. Some lacing on the glass. Ruby tint when held up to the light.

Score: 3/3

Flavor: Smoky/Briny flavor up front. Tastes of chocolate and coffee. Earthy and woody hop flavor, but is restrained. Moderate hop bitterness that comes through in the finish. Hops are well balanced with the malts. Hints of cherries. Slight hint of plum and raisin type esters.

Score: 17/20

Mouthfeel: Midium-high body. Medium carbonation. No warmth. Some stickiness left behind from the malts hang on the tongue. Slight astringency on the back of the tongue.

Score: 5/5

Overall Impression: Very good. The smoke malt almost dominates the aroma and the initial taste. The specialty malts do play well with the smoke, but I still find the smoke malt to be too assertive. I would aim to use a little less smoke rauch malts. The smoke almost tives the beer a salty/sour character. Esters are appropriate and play well with the malt character. This beer might do better as an Imperial IPA (category 14C).
